One problem with a 'final age' is that it'd be a lot of pressure to make it a good one. Alas now we have an answer to that - a bajillionty other little future ages It'd also have been rather clean from an expectation perspective because 'what comes after the future?'. At the time FE came out it *was* rumored to be the final age because it was filling the last slot on the GvG map.
